Inspirational Jam: “Easier Said”-Alessia Cara

“Healin’ and patience are lovers…don’t place the blame on your heart just to shut ’em up. There ain’t a rush to recover…”

This Inspirational Jam by Alessia Cara is dedicated to those who may be battling grief, hurt, depression, anxiety, etc., and are being told to simply pick themselves up and keep moving. I know for myself

“Easier Said” is a song about recovery. Instead of always seeking to be happy and ignore the bad, Alessia sings about the fact that basking in your sadness is necessary. And it is. It’s okay not to be okay.

I know all too well the importance of sitting in your feelings and going through grief and hurt. It is in moments of sadness where you are able to look at your circumstances dead in the face and better come to terms with whatever is going on. Acting like everything is okay all the time will ultimately have you in a breakdown mode when stuff finally hits you. No matter what anyone tells you, you simply can’t be strong all the time. It’s okay to break down, to vent to trusted people, and to sit in your sadness.

Prayer and positive thoughts to anyone battling depression, anxiety, and other mental issues. If you need to talk to someone, please consider reaching out to a hotline for additional help.

Inspirational Jam: “Girl Next Door”-Alessia Cara

So if I should die tomorrow, I’d die with all of me. And if I give back the time that I’ve borrowed, I know I gave everything...”

I love Alessia Cara so much because she stays true to who she is. With her latest album, The Pains of Growing, I had to feature one song on the album as this week’s Inspirational Jam.

On Alessia’s track, “Girl Next Door,” she sings about her own determination to make an impact and make her name known in this industry. However, she also plans to do it without losing herself or giving away pieces of her soul for money or accolades. She acknowledges that she doesn’t have it all together, and that she can be a “plain Jane,” but she’s comfortable with herself, her voice, and the messages she gives. That’s what will make her unforgettable.

The song really just inspired me to do the same. I hope and pray to share who I am, exactly as I am, and uplift other people with my work. I definitely don’t have it all together, but I refuse to leave this earth without having made an impact. I’m glad that I’ve done so in some ways, but I plan to do more. I hope this motivates you to do the same.

Inspirational Jam: “Four Pink Walls”-Alessia Cara

“I assumed there was only room for my dreams in my dreams, so I’d sleep and repeat ’til the moon went home. And I didn’t know where it’d take me…”

I was reminded of this great song by Alessia Cara while working on a playlist for my sister’s graduation party last night. Had to share it for this week’s Inspirational Jam!

On Alessia’s song “Four Pink Walls,” she sings about how, when she was a kid, she used to stare at the pink walls in her bedroom and dream of a better life. She wanted more for herself, and kind of felt stuck where she was. However, her talent and hard work ultimately opened a door for her to now be a successful, Grammy-winning artist!

I know that dream well. I didn’t have pink walls LOL, but I used to dream of reaching different goals that have finally happened for me. But it wasn’t just because I dreamed big. I put in the work, tears, money, losses, etc. etc. BUT IT EVENTUALLY HAPPENED. So I hope that this song serves as encouragement to someone on the verge of giving up to keep pushing and working, even if the dream doesn’t seem in reach.

Inspirational Jam: “I Can Only”-JoJo feat. Alessia Cara

“All that you’re gettin’ is all that you see
I’m cool with it
Nothing else ever made much sense to me
I’m not doing it…”

I love this week’s Inspirational Jam from JoJo featuring Alessia Cara!

On “I Can Only,” the two sing about how, no matter what anyone thinks, they can only be who they are! In a world where several people conform to the “norm,” and do what they see others do, it’s always great to see people be themselves, quirks and all. That’s what ultimately makes you stand out from the pack anyway.

As I’ve I gotten older, even though I can sometimes compare myself to others, I realize that I can only be myself. The introverted girl who hates small talk about nothing, and would rather be around people with good vibes. The girl who takes a while to warm up to people, but, once she does, is a loud, fun, and outgoing goofball, but still authentic and very loyal. The girl who does a better job of expressing herself sometimes on paper than verbally, and is sometimes a little awkward *shrugs*

I used to think that my quirks or my unique likes were things that I needed to fix, but they make me Brittany Shawnté. Some may love it, others may hate it. Regardless, I’m going to be myself. I want y’all to have that same mentality!

Inspirational Jam: “How Far I’ll Go”-Alessia Cara

The inspirational jam this week (5.25.17) is Alessia Cara’s version of “How Far I’ll Go” from Disney’s Moana!

Not even going to lie, I love Disney’s Moana! I took my little cousin to see it when it came out, and I couldn’t tell which one of us loved it more. The movie’s top song, “How Far I’ll Go,” originally sung by the movie’s star Auli’i Cravalho, is all about breaking away from people’s expectations of you and going towards what makes you happy! Even if you try to fit into people’s molds, your passion is going to keep calling you until you finally go after it. That’s what I got from the song, and the movie overall.

Well, Alessia Cara did her own version of the song for the movie’s soundtrack, and I actually have liked it a little more than the original for the longest. For her version, the producers put a little flavor on the music, and Alessia’s voice matches it perfectly.  However, what I did not know is that there was a video!
