GODFIRMATION: God Sees Us

This Godfirmation may seem simple, but it’s an important one to remember.

We know that God is the omniscient God, but He sees US each for our individual personalities, gifts, purposes, and even hurts. And we see that through the story of Hagar in Genesis 16!

For anyone who does not know the story of Hagar, she was an Egyptian servant to Sarah, the wife of Abraham in the Bible. Abraham (formerly Abram) had been promised by God to be the “Father of Many Nations” in Genesis 15. However, both he and Sarah were old, and Sarah had been barren. So she took matters into her own hands, and gave Hagar to Abraham to conceive a child. When they did, Hagar and Sarah had continual conflict (which shows us why we ought to leave things to God…but that’s another post for another day).

Hagar eventually ran away, but an angel of God convinced her to return, giving her a prophecy of her unborn son, Ishmael, in Genesis 16. It was then that Hagar called God, “El Roi,” or “the God Who sees me.

And I thought that was so powerful because, even in a seemingly lowly position as a servant and (let’s be real) an appointed mistress, God still saw her and thought enough of her to speak to her through an angel. He encouraged her to return, informing her that her son would also have many descendants. Her role was still important.

As individuals, God still sees us and our issues, and HE CARES. He wants to have a connection with us — no matter who we are, what we do, where we work, etc. He cares for each of us and sees us, and that’s good news to me!
