It’s Palm Sunday, which is the day Jesus made his triumphant entry into Jerusalem as depicted in the Gospels (Matthew 21:1-11; Mark 11:1-11; Luke 19:28-40, and John 12:12-19) I’ll be honest with y’all, though I always had a bit of a qualm about Palm Sunday, because the Jews were praising Jesus, shouting “Hosanna, Hosanna!” that day. Less than a week later, it was “Crucify Him!”
Now understandably, everything that happened HAD to happen for Jesus to fulfill His mission to die and rise from the dead for our sins. But still…those people were FICKLE! But then again…I’ve been too. My pastor broke it down in his Palm Sunday sermon this year, and he reminded me that this is a prime example of why it’s important to be a FOLLOWER of Jesus and not just a fan.
Jesus did some incredible things while He was here on earth. In addition to His teachings, He did amazing miracles and healings for people. The problem is that some believed in Him and “loved” Him because of what He could do, but weren’t necessarily believing in Who He truly was.
That’s how we can be sometimes too. We praise God and we love on Jesus when we get the new job or house, or that positive health report comes through. Or whatever other blessing we receive. But when we’re in waiting seasons or times when all seems lost…or even times when everything seems to be in a smooth place? Are we still consistent in our relationships with Him?
It’s easy to claim to love Jesus and follow Him when things are good and blessings are seemingly flowing. But what will your heart posture be if and when circumstances change? Will you still follow Jesus when you’re not sure how things are going to pan out? Instead of being fans of what Jesus can do, we need to be legit followers of Him, faithful to Him and His Word no matter the circumstance.
