#MustWatch: Michelle Obama Shines in “The Light We Carry” Netflix Special with Oprah Winfrey

My Forever First Lady Michelle Obama released her latest Netflix special, “The Light We Carry,” on April 25, 2023 (in connection with her latest book of the same name and subsequent podcast with Audible).

The documentary was a collaboration with Netflix and the Obamas’ Higher Ground Productions (the company behind projects like “Fatherhood,” “American Factory,” “Waffles and Mochi,” and, of course, Mrs. Obama’s 2020 special, “Becoming”).

I haven’t read “The Light We Carry” yet, but I had to watch this special. One, I mean, come on. It’s Michelle Obama. Two, I was in great need of a boost to remind myself of the light that I carry. And I definitely got that with this discussion! So I had to share some great takeaways with y’all.

#MondayMotivation

I love this quote from the legendary Oprah Winfrey! I hope using this as a #MondayMotivation quote gives you encouragement and a push to get through this week.

When I was younger, I never saw my challenges as “gifts.” I saw them as annoying obstacles to what I wanted. As I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized just how much they taught me. They forced me to step away from what I knew, and find new processes, skills, and perseverance to power through. Like Oprah shares in this quote, I had to find a new way to stand. I still do when new challenges arise.

Obstacles to the life we desire or the goals we have are inevitable. I know you know that. But, instead of always looking at them as hindrances, consider what you may have to change and how you can adapt. Consider how they can help you. Think about how you can come out better because you went through it. Find your new balance, and press on.

Words of Wisdom: “Take Responsibility For Your Life”-Oprah Winfrey

This Words of Wisdom video comes from none other than the legendary Oprah Winfrey!

I see quite a few people online who have businesses, music, or whatever that still get upset when people they know don’t support you. This clip from Oprah is very appropriate to kindly but honestly remind you that NOBODY OWES YOU ANYTHING. “If you’re sitting around waiting on somebody to save you, to fix you, to even help you, you are wasting your time,” Oprah boldly stated in the clip. You have to do the work on yourself for yourself often BY YOURSELF.

It’s really easy to point the finger at other people for your circumstances. It’s easy to get mad at people for not supporting you or helping you when you thought they should’ve. I know because I’ve done it. But, after a while, I had to get honest with myself. Why was I expecting other people to automatically help me with MY life and issues? What was is that I needed to be doing myself to get better? Was I actually doing those things? I had to get to a stronger level of personal accountability, and take full responsibility for my own life!

The same goes for each of you. Sure, it’s nice for people to help you and you should show appreciation for that. But never automatically expect things from anyone, or get mad at other people for not helping you. It is what it is. You do what YOU have to do, and everything else will fall into place.

Words of Wisdom: “Live Beyond the Expectations of Others”-RuPaul

I love me some RuPaul. I have ever since I saw him as Connie the Bodega woman in Crooklyn. Beyond drag and music, I always loved the fact that he seemed comfortable being himself regardless of what others may think. And I’m sure he had a rough time along the way, but he stands tall in who he is. That’s why I love these Words of Wisdom from him!

We really can get caught up in what other people think and expect of us. Family, friends, and even strangers on the internet. However, over time, I’ve learned to pay most people no mind if they don’t agree with my look, my words, or whatever else. I can’t be worried about what other people want me to be or what they think I should do, especially when it’s just negative criticism. If it don’t apply, I really let that mess fly. Mean and rude comments say a lot about the other person, and not me.
