Inspirational Jam: “Ambitious Girl”-Wale

“Ambitious girl, you just wanna win, and you’d rather chase your dreams than to try to chase these men…”

This Inspirational Jam today is just for the ladies. And it’s…less of a song, but more of spoken word set to music.

Wale‘s poem “Ambitious Girl” is for all of the women out there working their butts off to achieve their dreams. It’s not always a pretty or perfect journey. It can be downright rough, if we’re honest. But our dreams are much bigger than any level of discomfort or fear, and we grind hard to make them into reality. Wale celebrates that and encourages us on this track, as he has on others.

I played this ALL THE TIME when it first came out. Seriously. It was a ringtone. It was my alarm. It was playing in my ears on my way to class or when I was typing up papers in college. It was serious motivation back in 2010 going into sophomore year, and still continues to be. I hope it inspires some of you other ladies, too.

Inspirational Jam: “Get Up”-Mary Mary

Get up…don’t sit there! Get up…if you wanna get there. Clocks don’t stop and time won’t wait…”

Mary Mary came through with this Inspirational Jam back in 2008, and it’s still a hit that I love to play to get my tail into gear!

“Get Up” was featured on the sister duo’s fourth album, The Sound, and ended up winning a Grammy for Best Gospel Performance! The contagiously upbeat song will motivate you, even first thing in the morning, to get up and get moving! There’s only 24 hours in a day, so we have to get going and make each moment count for something. That’s what this song is all about.

So whether you’re getting an early morning workout, getting ahead of the game on your side hustle, or getting stuff done around the house, this song definitely will get your day started on the right track!

 

Inspirational Jam: “Watch Me Shine”-Joanna Pacitti

“I’m about to switch my style
And soon things may get wild
But I will prove I can conquer anything…”

If you’re a fan of Legally Blonde starring Reese Witherspoon, you might recognize today’s Inspirational Jam from Joanna Pacitti!

Joanna’s song, “Watch Me Shine,” was featured in a scene where Reese’s character, Elle Woods, had a prank played on her at Halloween by her Harvard Law classmates. They took her as a joke to be a lawyer because she was a little ditzy, really outgoing and fun, and wore A LOT of pink. After that prank though, Elle used that prank as motivation to put in the work to kill it at Harvard, and prove her haters wrong. All while this great track is playing!

This song is all about proving yourself to be great, and refusing to give up until you reach your goals. Everybody else better watch out and step back, because you ain’t playing! I know that’s where I am right now…what about you?

Inspirational Jam: “Shining”-DJ Khaled feat. Beyoncé and Jay Z

DJ Khaled‘s “Shining” featuring talented power couple Beyoncé and Jay Z is my feel-good, get-on-my-grind-and-get-this-money song. All of us have one, so I’m glad to share mine for this week’s Inspirational Jam!

Several of us have already heard the track, I’m sure, but it moves me to keep going and to not let the circumstances of life or people try to slow me down. I’m determined to continue to win out here, and keep a smile on my face throughout it all. I don’t know about you guys, but I feel like my life is on the up and up, and I want to keep that momentum going into the New Year. This song is definitely a push that I need!

I LOVE Jazmine Sullivan! She’s an incredible talent, and also seems like a cool person in real life. Today’s inspirational jam, “Masterpiece (Mona Lisa)” is one of my favorite songs by her, and I hope you enjoy it as well.

This song is about finally seeing the beauty and abilities within yourself, realizing that every part of you is beautiful. I know I lose confidence in myself, not only physically, but in terms of my skills as well. There’s this small voice in my head that I have to constantly fight, telling me that I’m not good enough or I’m not pretty enough. That I’m simply not enough. Hard as it is, I have to shake off those lies, and believe in myself regardless.

That’s what I want and hope for each of you! We’re all truly perfectly imperfect,  and that’s fine. We should each stand confidently in what we bring to the table! Beyond just our appearance, but also our individual gifts in life.
