Someone I follow on Instagram shared this Words of Wisdom video from Taraji P. Henson. I’ve seen it previously, but I need this reminder today.
In this clip from an interview with Essence, Taraji shares that she doesn’t concern herself with attempting to make people happy about who she is and what she does. She remains who she is instead of trying to change up to impress others. “I live my truth. If you don’t see that, then you don’t love me anyway,” she shrugged. “I don’t waste time trying to get you over here on my side.”This was a lesson that took me a while to learn. No matter what you do, no matter what you say, no matter how talented, creative or whatever else you think you are, not everybody’s going to like you or support you. Don’t worry about getting people who don’t support you on your side. Matter of fact, don’t worry about getting anybody on your side. Be who you are as a person and live your truth.
I’ve learned to do me, work on what I need to work on over here, and try to be a better person than I was yesterday. When it comes to my work and who I am as a person, those who are supposed to relate and gravitate to my stories and content do and will. However, I can’t be focused on trying to make people love me, not in my professional or personal life. I won’t lose sight of who I am and what I’m trying to do to get people to rock with me. I hope you all have the same resolve!
